What is a Nurse Practitioner?
Nurse Practitioner
(NP) is an advance practice nurse who has completed a master’s level university degree and has advanced knowledge and clinical expertise to diagnose, treat, and manage disease or illness. NPs prescribe medications, order/interpret laboratory/diagnostic tests, and refer to specialists when needed. NPs do not work under the direction of a physician but work in collaboration with physicians, specialists and other healthcare team members such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, Extra Mural Program, pharmacists, etc. NPs provide comprehensive clinical care that blends the practice of medicine with the practice of nursing.
